The structured sloppiness of this collection is what intrigues me the most; it’s as if the pieces were thrown together and deliberately frayed, snipped and slouched to make it look like the garments were being held together only by the genius that created them. The end result looks like a cross between a pirate, a colonial foot  soldier and some sort of underworld renegade. Ann Demeulemeester’s Spring 2012 collection deconstructs the modern image of masculinity and takes it back to a time when men actually had to shed blood to prove their manhood. I find the looks extremely exciting and as everyone else has written, very romantic.
The guy who wears this collection is a theater major—what else could he be really? He lives in the characters he plays for extended periods of time before he hits the stage. He only plays tragic heroes. He recites his lines at random, awkward times to his few friends and he really doesn’t give a fuck about how ridiculous it looks because he’s 100 percent committed to making his character more real then his own life. He would rather spend time sitting by the river reading poetry and reciting lines for his next audition than hanging out with friends. The only girls he’s attracted to are the ones he can’t have because that’s what helps him maintain his tragically romantic persona. He’s also that dude in all the English classes who has the most tender, most insightful  interpretations of the tragic characters in the novels assigned for class (and even the ones that aren’t) so he always gets a 4.0 for participation even though he doesn’t show up for like, half the classes because he’d rather be a student of life then a student at college.
